Car insurance has, no pun intended, many moving parts. There are lots of ways to save on your policy but also lots of coverage areas that can be easily neglected or overlooked. It’s important to understand what coverage you need, that there are different types available for different age groups and geographic locations, and that there are usually several insurance carriers from which to choose.
As those of us who have been on the road for a while can attest, these days there are more distracted drivers than ever. Data compiled by the National Safety Institute show that cell phone use causes 1.6 million crashes annually. In addition, nearly 400,000 injuries result from texting and driving each year - and this is despite the fact that 48 states ban texting while driving. Drivers seem to always be in a hurry and this rushing around leads to:
Distracted, unfocused drivers
Drivers who are looking down at phones instead of up at the road ahead
Drivers attempting to multi-task while behind the wheel (examples include putting on make-up, smoking, texting and/or eating)
The danger only increases if the driver is a teen. In 2016, 2,433 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed in motor vehicle crashes. Divided out, that results in the heartbreaking statistic that six teens ages 16–19 died every day due to motor vehicle crashes. And that of course does not include the hundreds of thousands who are injured in crashes each year.**
These statistics demonstrate how important it is to have comprehensive auto coverage for you and for any other drivers in your household. Having too little coverage can lead to devastating financial losses in the event of an accident. It is essential that your auto liability policy is up to date and with high limits, to protect you in the event of an accident. If you are at fault and if the incident results in injury to the other driver (or passengers), your Valeri insurance agent will be there to guide you through the process.
